Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) Terminals Guide
Information compiled by David Enrich, aviation and airport guide expert since 1999.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is Sweden’s largest airport and the main international gateway to Stockholm. It is well known for its efficient layout, modern Scandinavian design and easy connections between terminals. The airport currently operates with multiple terminals, primarily handling domestic and international flights across Europe and beyond.
History & Development
Arlanda Airport opened in 1962 to replace Bromma Airport as Stockholm’s main international hub. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly, adding new terminals and improving infrastructure to handle growing passenger demand.
The development of SkyCity in the late 1990s marked a major milestone, connecting terminals and integrating rail transport directly into the airport. Today, ARN continues to modernize its terminals with a focus on sustainability and passenger comfort.
ARN is constantly evolving. Always check your terminal in advance, as some airlines may change gates or areas depending on the season.
Terminal Overview
Terminal 2
Mainly used for international flights within Europe. It offers a compact layout with check-in counters, security control and boarding gates located within short walking distances.
Levels: Departures and arrivals are efficiently organized on connected levels with quick access to SkyCity.
This is one of the fastest terminals to navigate — ideal if you arrive late.
Terminal 3
A smaller terminal primarily used for regional and domestic flights. It is connected to Terminal 2 and shares some facilities.
Services are limited here, so consider using SkyCity before heading to your gate.
Terminal 4
Dedicated mainly to domestic flights, especially operated by low-cost and regional airlines. Recently upgraded, it offers modern facilities and improved passenger flow.
Zones: Check-in, security and boarding areas are clearly separated and easy to follow.
Allow extra time during peak hours, as domestic traffic can be busy.
Terminal 5
The largest and most important terminal at ARN, handling most international long-haul and Schengen flights. It features a wide range of shops, restaurants and lounges.
Levels:
- Lower level: arrivals and baggage claim
- Main level: check-in and departures
- Upper areas: lounges and additional services
Walking distances can be long, check your gate early and plan ahead.
